History: When Czechoslovakia became a country in 1918, previously known as Bohemia, the production of quality glass & beads began to be exported between 1918-1939. The market became a a leading employer & industry for citizens in the newly formed country. The area was already an highly sought after region for mining garnet gemstones that were used to create Victorian costume jewelry. The region was also the center for Swarovski glass, which was introduced by Austrian jeweler Daniel Swarovski.

Although the origins & influence of Art Deco jewelry (1919-1939) can be seen in the 1900’s, the official name originated from the Exposition International des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes that took place in Paris in 1925. After the Art Nouveau Movement declined, there was still a highly sought after market for Art, but more emphasis was placed on modern industrial designs instead of artisan handcrafted work. The French exposition celebrated & highlighted the newest styles in decorative arts throughout the world. The Art Deco Era was inspired by a variety of styles, which included Oriental & African designs. Ancient Egyptian motifs & Pre-Columbian art influenced jewelry styles. During the Art Deco Era, Cubism and the use of geometric lines were popular in jewelry & architecture. Popular jewelry designs included calibre cut stones, geometric shapes, & intricately cut filigree work. Some materials commonly used were platinum, Marcasites, glass, pearls, and rubies.
